CHECK: DO ALL LEARNERS HAVE A CONTAINER AND CARDBOARD?
TASK (circuit drawn in book and terminology written up) 1. Get your exercise book. Go to the back page of your book. Write a heading "Terminology and Meanings" Copy the 'Component List' including diagram, term, and the explanation. Write and draw clearly so that you will easily read it again later. 2. Turn to the front of the book. Write a heading e.g. First Circuit. Draw the circuit diagram carefully. Then label the diagram e.g. Push To Make Switch, Resistor etc.
The Light Emitting Diode is Polarised
TASK (mark the Earth side of LED) Locate the flat mark on your LED. If you can't find it, it's on the side with the short leg. Mark it with a marker pen.
WARNING: WILL BE USING A HOT SOLDERING IRON. POTENTIAL HAZARD
CIRCUIT CONSTRUCTION
Materials needed: 1 x plastic container for components 1 x a piece of cardboard approximately 100 x 100 mm 1 x length of copper tape 1 x resistor 470 ohms 1 x LED (Light Emitting Diode) 1 x 9v battery clip
METHOD 1. Check you have the correct materials 2. Watch demonstration on how to draw up your circuit diagram on the card. 3. Draw up the circuit diagram 4. Stick on copper tape (take your time- there is limited copper tape) 5. Make your PTM switch, add it to your circuit 6. Watch the demonstration of how to use a solder iron. Here's a useful video https://youtu.be/Qps9woUGkvI 7. Solder on the resistor (Can face either direction) 8. Solder on LED (Careful with the polarity) 9. Solder connections in the copper tape 10. Get a 9 volt battery to test the circuit
SUCCESS! Well done. Now get out your camera and photograph your circuit. Email the photo/s to your school gmail address. Put the photo/s in your Google Drive folder for 10CTR. Name each photo 'circuit1a', 'circuit1b' etc.
VOLTAGE What is voltage? You may have a pretty good idea already but let's be sure. Settle in and watch this video about voltage.
TASK Get out your writing equipment and turn to the the "Terminology and meanings" pages at the back of the book. There should be a heading "Terminology and meanings" at the top of the page. Write 'Voltage' and next to it write 'measured in volts. It is a measure of electrical pressure.' Write "Battery" and next to it write 'a store of electricity. Has a positive and negative terminal'. Write"Copper" and next to it write ' a good conductor of electricity. Electricity travels easily through metals such as copper'.
USING A MULTIMETER A multimeter can be used to measure Voltage and Resistance in components and a circuit. This video is a good introduction on how to use a Multimeter. Note: it's important to use your multimeter correctly or the fuse will blow. If this happens we will not be able to use it again until it's repaired.
TASK To measure the voltage of the battery (red - positive, black - negative). How many volts is in this battery. What are volts? Try measuring the voltage of the resistor and LED. LED is short for Light Emitting Diode. Voltage should be measured in parallel as shown in the video. For more info click here. What is the sum of the voltage for the resistor and the LED? Is it similar to that of the battery? Lastly, try the 'continuity test' to show there is a circuit. Switch down and up. The probe needs to be on the resistor side of the switch to test a broken circuit (no buzz sound).
TERMINOLOGY AND MEANINGS Multimeter: An electronic measuring instrument. It can measure voltage, resistance and current. Continuity test: Tests whether an electric circuit exits. A buzz sound is emitted by the multimeter when a circuit is found.
